Situated on the Kumari hills along the Rushikulya river near Purushottampur in the Ganjam district of Odisha, approximately 28km from Brahmapur city, the Tara Tarini Temple stands as a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Adi Shakti. Maa Tara Tarini, worshipped as the Breast Shrine (Sthana Peetha), holds a significant place as the embodiment of Adi Shakti Sati Devi.

This ancient temple ranks among the oldest pilgrimage centers devoted to Hindu mother goddesses and is recognized as one of the four principal Shakti Peethas and Tantra Peethas in India. It holds profound importance for the followers of the Shakta (Shaktism) sect of Hinduism, being considered a major pilgrimage destination and a cherished Shakti Peetha & Tantra Peetha.

Before they built a real temple, people used to think of the whole mountain as a special place for the Goddess. They believed the nearby mountain was where the Goddess's partner, Bhairava, lived. These two mountains were worshipped for a long time as a special spot,  The mountains looked important because of their natural shape and because people thought of the Mother as the powerful spirit of the land.

Later on, they built a temple on this land, making the tribal tradition official. However, records say that until the 17th century, regular folks didn't even know about this place
